Prior to his appointment as Professor of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University, Richard Wakeman was Professor of Process Engineering at the University of Exeter where in 1987 he established the self-financing Separation Processes Centre. He started his industrial career as a trouble shooting chemical engineer with Lennig Chemicals at their Gateshead plant, before returning to UMIST where he obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1973. He has been a chemical engineering consultant since 1972.

Professor Wakeman has served on many professional bodies, including committees of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, The Royal Academy of Engineering, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (and its predecessors), the Council of The Filtration Society (of which he is the Honorary Secretary), as well as representing the Society of Chemical Industry and the IChemE on the European Federation of Chemical Engineers Filtration and Separation Working Party (Chairman from 1996 to 2006).

He has been a Director of The Filtration Society Ltd and Exeter Enterprises Ltd, and he is a Visiting Professor at Pardubice University in the Czech Republic. He is a Chartered Engineer, a member of the Fédération Europpéene d’Associations Nationales d’Ingénieurs, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1996.

Professor Richard Wakeman has authored over 400 technical publications including patents, books, papers, and reports. He has delivered numerous technical presentations, keynote addresses and speeches and has acted as congress and conference chairman, workshop presenter and round table moderator at over 150 international events through Europe and North America. He has received several prestigious international medals for his contributions to research, including:

  • The Gold Medal, The Filtration Society (1993, 2003, 2005)
